Dr. Carl H. Mitlehner, 76, of Frederick passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2007, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Dorothy Schmitt Mitlehner, to whom he was married for 49 years.
He was born on August 25, 1930, in Clementon, NJ and was the son of the late Elizabeth Schmich and Julius Saar.
He was also predeceased by his adoptive father, Alfred Mitlehner
He graduated from Mamaroneck High School in New York and received his bachelor's degree from Harpur College (State University of New York at Binghamton) in 1958.
After graduation, he immediately received the position of Assistant Director of Admissions at Harpur College. In the spring of 1961 he took the job of Assistant Dean of Students at State University of New York at Farmingdale. During his time in Farmingdale he earned a master's degree from Hofstra University and a PhD in higher education from New York University. He moved with his family to Frederick in 1969, upon accepting the position of Dean of Instructional Services at Frederick Community College. During his tenure at FCC he also served as acting president and as a professor before retiring in 1990.
Carl served as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Germany for three years during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post 3285, American Legion Post 11, and the Frederick Elks Club. He was also the past president of both the Frederick Kiwanis Club and of the Waverly Elementary School PTA, and he was a former Mardi Gras King.
Carl had great joy with his rose garden, golfing, fishing, computers, the beach and listening to musicals. He especially enjoyed creating memorable meals for his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Trudi Capotosto and husband Tom of Austin, TX, Elise Weston-Dawkes and husband Andrew of Potomac, Krista Girard and husband David of Frederick and Carl A. Mitlehner and wife Denise of Ashburn, VA; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Jill and Dana Capotosto, Michael, William and Matthew Weston-Dawkes, Cullen and Erika Girard, Nicole and Katherine Mitlehner; one brother, Alfred Mitlehner of Cheshire, CT and a sister, Elizabeth Pennella and husband Eugene of Greenwich, CT.

Services: The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Md. where a memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Dan Roff officiating. Interment will be private.
