Dr. Arthur B. Callahan, 82 of Frederick, Maryland, passed away after a long battle with lung cancer, on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of Angela Constantinescu Callahan.
Born April 4, 1928 in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Timothy and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Callahan.
Dr. Callahan served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. degree in Biology-Chemistry. He earned his A.M. and PhD in Physiology-Biophysics from Boston University. Dr. Callahan was employed with the Office of Naval research in Washington, D. C. from 1965 - 1983. From 1984 until retirement he was employed as Director, Biomedical Sciences Department, Naval Research Laboratory, Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT. He had multiple publications in the Bio-Medical Field. Dr. Callahan had experience in initiation, coordination and participation in international scientific programs. As coordinator and representative for inter-governmental medical and research programs for the Office of Naval Research he had the opportunity to facilitate agreements with governments of Canada, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, India, Egypt and Great Britain. He was a member of the Biophysical Society, American Society for Cell Biology, International Society for Supramolecular Biology, American Association for the Advancement of science, Society for Cryobiology, Sigma XI, Lifetime member VFW Post 3285 and a past member of the American Legion Post #011.
Dr. Callahan loved Civil War history, sailing his boat, working on computers and classical music. In addition to his wife he is survived by his stepdaughter Ioana Piersall and husband Mark of Frederick, daughter Pamela Shank Callahan, sons Timothy, John, Harold and Paul Callahan, several grandchildren and nephews, a brother Paul Callahan and wife Peggy of Norfolk, MA and sister-in-law Andrea M. Callahan. He was preceded in death by three brothers Francis, Edward and Joseph Callahan.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 19, at 3:00 p.m. from Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD with Dr. Thomas Kincaid officiating.
Interment will be private.
