Mr. Douglas Harry Mills, 69, of Frederick, MD passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Rita Jane Mills.
Born June 17, 1942 in at the Frederick Memorial Hospital he was the son of Annabelle M. Mills of Frederick and the late Douglas H.E. Mills.
Mr. Mills graduated from Brunswick High School class of 1960. He attended FCC and completed courses in mathematics, drafting and flight school Doug then joined the U.S. Army Reserves and served for seven years (1965-1972) at the Flair USAR Center, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. Douglas enjoyed music, especially playing guitar. He was a member of the band "Brunswick Boppers" in the late 1950's and with "The Country Style Show" in the early 1980's. Doug obtained his first job in 1961 with Price Electric Co. in Frederick. After two years as a lab technician there he was hired on with the AT & T underground facility in Monrovia, MD as a communications craftsman. He was then promoted to Engineering Associate and transferred to the 20th and L St. engineering group in Washington, D.C. While there he was promoted to Supervisor and relocated back to Monrovia. He was then transferred to an AT & T location near Dranesville, VA and continued as supervisor until his early retirement in 1990.
After retirement, his interests turned to his hobbies: Model railroading, flying radio control model airplanes, and playing guitar. He was a part-time employee of "Loco Motives," a small company in Taneytown specializing in custom painting and pad printing model trains. After the company dissolved, Doug started his own custom printing and decorating model trains operation in his basement. He was asked to join the "Covington Plastic Molding Co." part-time in New Oxford, PA where he operated plastic injection molding machines and did parts assembly and then took his remaining time to enjoy his remaining retirement years
In addition to his mother he is survived by his three children Shelley Denise Nester and fiance Lester Koogle of Knoxville, Cynthia Jane Vanaman and husband Dan of Frederic, Kristopher Douglas Mills and companion Lori of Frederick; 5 grandchildren Eric Anthony Nester and wife Samantha, Justin Robert Nester, Danielle Jane Vanaman, Katelyn Denise Mills, Lauren Michelle Mills and Kristen Elizabeth Mills and Josh Fisher of Frederick; great grandchild Dreama Nester. He will also be remembered by his lunch buddy Lou.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 3-5PM and 7-9PM where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 6 at 11AM. The Rev. Timothy Fisher will officiate
Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
