Dorothy Schwemler Gilkey, 90, died on Saturday, June 13 at the Fahrney - Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro.
Born on November 29, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Lillian Wilk Schwemler.
Dorothy graduated from High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended Kent State University. She was a beloved Children's Librarian in both Elyria, Ohio and in Prince George County, Md. She also worked as an Escort in Colonial Williamsburg. Much of her life was devoted to serving others through volunteer work at the Smithsonian Institution and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, as well as at the Washington County Hospital and the Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Edward Gilkey. She is survived by one daughter, Diane Daugherty and son-in-law Maurice of Frederick, Md. and one son, William J. Gilkey of Houma, La. She is also survived by six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and her many loving care givers and friends at Fahrney - Keedy Home and Village.
Funeral services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
