Dorothy Louise Hady Walter

May 17, 1911 — November 14, 2009

Dorothy Louise Hady Walter died November 14, 2009 at Homewood Retirement Center, Frederick, MD. Dorothy was 98 years old when she went home to be with her Lord.

Dorothy was born May 17, 1911 in Meyersdale, PA to William Franklin Hady (an engineer on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad) and Annie Bertha Deist Hady. Dorothy was the youngest and last surviving of twelve brothers and sisters: Ella, Maude, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret, Nell, William, Michael, George, Anna, Fred, and Jim. Dorothy remembered women winning the right to vote in 1920 and proudly accompanied her older sister Maude when she became the first woman to register to vote in Meyersdale.

Dorothy married her sweetheart Lt. Col. Henry Madison Walter, Jr March 2, 1934. Between 1934 and 1947, they lived in many states because of his work and military service. At the outbreak of World War II, Henry was deployed overseas to England and Dorothy took their sons, Henry and George, back home to Meyersdale. After the war, the family relocated to a 100-year-old farm house on Highland Avenue in Johnstown, PA. Her husband taught chemistry at the Johnstown Campus of the University of Pittsburgh until 1971. He died of cancer September 1975. Dorothy was a gracious hostess for her husband's academic colleagues and encouraged her sons' educational pursuits: Henry earned BS and PhD degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and worked in both private industry and the U. S. Department of Energy. George earned BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and worked as an electronics engineer for North American Aviation/Rockwell/Boeing.

Dorothy will be remembered especially for her loving nature, her generosity, her elegant style, and her scrumptious cooking. She loved treating guests to chicken salad, watermelon pickle, and sand tart Christmas cookies.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Amity United Church of Christ, Meyersdale, PA and St. John's United Church of Christ, Johnstown, PA. Since 1997, she had attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Frederick, MD. She belonged to Anna L. Windolph Chapter 495, Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.

Dorothy was devoted to her family. She is survived by sons Henry and wife Doris (Lokerson) of Frederick, MD and George and wife Carolyn (Tilley) of Fullerton, CA. She is also survived by grandchildren Barbara and husband Steve Cardone, Richard and wife Lilian, James and wife Andrea, Louise Walter, M.D., and Karen Walter, J.D., and by great-grandsons Henry Christopher Walter, Joseph Cardone, and Maximilian Cardone.
