Dorothy Earlene Stewart, 71, of Frederick, MD, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Affectionately known to family and close friends as "Gus", she was a genuine fighter. She battled many medical issues with the tenacity and strength of a true warrior. It was only recently, after fighting stage IV cancer for nine years, that she grew tired.
Born in Harrisburg, PA on July 19, 1951 to the late Percy Stewart and Ursula Stewart (Nee Thompson). Dorothy spent her childhood in Ijamsville, Maryland and called Maryland her home for the majority of her life. In addition to both of her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ronald Lee Stewart and Donald Leon Stewart, as well as the love of her life, her partner Leonard Leroy Marshall.
Dorothy worked in the food and hospitality industry for over thirty years. Later in her career, she found gratification working with the Montgomery County School System, as a Cafeteria Manager. She retired in 2013 to take care of her mother full-time.
It was the simple things that brought Dorothy the most joy. She loved to play bingo and solve word search puzzles. She was an avid reader and loved a good Stuart Woods or James Patterson novel and, like her mother, was a devoted fan of the Baltimore Orioles. Dorothy loved spending time with family and friends. Before her illness progressed, one of her favorite things was her famous grandma-granddaughter outings, with her granddaughter.
While she certainly had a tough exterior, underneath that was one of the kindest and most generous people you'd meet. She was quick to offer help to anyone in need. Even as she was transitioning from this life, she was more concerned with the well-being of those around her than her own. She made friends everywhere she went and was often the reason for someone's smile. Her absence in this world will surely be felt by many.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Tamika Baldwin and her husband Mark, and granddaughter Laykin. Her sister, Sheila Sims (Charles), and her brother William Stewart, three nephews and two nieces, along with a host cousins. She was especially close with her cousin, Allen Carter. She was also blessed with many dear friends, including Dyane Prather, Lloyd Frazier and Yvonne Thomas.
Lastly, Dorothy and her family were grateful for the care she received from her oncologist, Dr. Yun Oh. The dedication to Dorothy's health and overall well-being will never be forgotten.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 5th, at Stauffer Funeral Home located at: 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland. Dorothy's Celebration will begin at 11:00 am. Pastor Darren Gerald will be officiating. To honor her memory, please wear red to the service.
