Dorothy Olive (Main) Poffenberger, 104, of Hagerstown and formerly of Boonsboro, Maryland passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019 at her home with family. She was the wife of the late Nyle Poffenberger, who preceded her in death in 1965.
Born on February 2, 1915, at home, near Middletown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Lafayette A. and Susan J. Kephart Main.
Dorothy was employed by Ross Garments sewing factory for more than 30 years. She also spent time with her family, along with her late husband, running their small family farmette selling fruits and vegetables in the community. Her hobbies ranged from watching the Baltimore Orioles play baseball to creating elaborate completely hand-sewn quilts. Dottie participated in a quilting club at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren for many years. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church at Locust Grove.
Dorothy is survived by one grandson, Michael L. Shank of Rohrersville; five granddaughters, Tina M. Shank of Hagerstown, Barbara J. Leatherman and husband, Randy, of Fairplay, Cathy S. Wetzel and husband, Rock, of Hagerstown, Dottie C. Howard and husband, Bob, of Boonsboro and Lisa McFadden and husband, Jim, of Falling Waters, WV; seven great-grandchildren, Dwan Timmons of Waynesboro, Lee Mitchell of Hagerstown, Kevin Bohrer and wife, Hillary, of Greencastle, Krystyn N. Zacharias and husband, Larry, of Inwood, WV, Jared M. Leatherman of Hagerstown, Jordan M. Leatherman and wife, Kirsten, of Gettysburg, PA, Bryan D. Ferraiuolo and Felicia of Martinsburg, WV; nine great-great-grandchildren; two very special people in her life, Evy Sarimento of Hagerstown, family friend and caregiver and April M. Castle of Hagerstown, great-niece and caregiver; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Arthur Lee “Ottie” Poffenberger and Shirley Marie (Poffenberger) Shank; four sisters; and two brothers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the funeral home. Rev. Regina R. Beard will officiate. Rev. Darrell Layman, family friend, will deliver the eulogy. Final resting place ceremonies will be held at the Boonsboro Cemetery.
Memorial donations are strongly encouraged, in lieu of flowers, to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742. The family wishes to thank Thuryle Payton for her love and care and time spent with Nannie over the past few months as a Hospice volunteer.
