Dorothy Lowman

Dorothy Buckingham Lowman, 106, of Mt. Airy died on March 18, 2020 at Homewood, Williamsport.  She was born on a farm in Winfield, Maryland on June 9, 1913.  She lived on the farm with her parents and four older brothers, and went to a one room school in Winfield through the third grade.
When she was 8 years old, her mother died and she moved to Mt. Airy to live with her Aunt Lula Pickett.  She graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1930, and graduated from Towson in 1932 with a teaching certificate.  Dorothy felt fortunate to get a teaching job right away, and taught 4th grade in Carroll County at Mechanicsville for 2 years.  She then taught at Winfield Elementary for 14 years.  Dorothy stopped teaching when her daughter was born in 1948.  In 1954 she returned to teaching the 5th grade at Mt. Airy Elementary until retiring in 1974.

Dorothy married Lester Lowman in 1941 and they continued to live in Mt. Airy until 1998, when they moved to Homewood.  They had been married 61 years when Mr. Lowman died in 2002.  While living in Mt. Airy, Dorothy was a member and past president of the Mt. Airy Garden Club.  She enjoyed gardening and working with her flower beds, loved to read and participating in the Christmas door decorations each year.  She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Easter Star, a member of Calvary Methodist Church in Mt. Airy for many years and taught Sunday School.  She was also on the board and was membership chair for the Mt. Airy Swimming Club at its beginning.
Dorothy was a member and past secretary of the Carroll County Retired Teachers, and enjoyed keeping in touch with her many friends in the organization.
She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Omicron Chapter, and was a past social chair.

With her husband she enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and England, and attending many Elder hostels.  She had an active interest in Maryland history, and she and Lester made many day trips in Maryland and Pennsylvania.  She has always taken a keen interest in birds and nature, and enjoyed walking in the fields near her home in Mt. Airy and along the C & O towpath, but she especially loved keeping up with her family.

She has one daughter, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandsons, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Services and interment will be private.
