Dorothy Baker

November 25, 1921 — May 20, 2020

Dorothy J. Slick Baker, 98, of Hagerstown, MD, went home to the arms of her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, surrounded by love for her eternal destination of heaven, on the morning of Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

Born November 25, 1921, in Hagerstown she was the daughter of the late Omar R. Slick and Flora Donaldson Slick. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-two years, Alvey Sylvester Baker, Sr.

She was a faithful servant of God, an honorable wife, a loving mother, doting grandmother/great-grandmother/great-great-grandmother, provider of delectable homemade treats, and the sweetest, kindest, strongest women one could ever meet.

She was a lifelong Maryland resident where she worked on the family farm and raised thirteen children. She loved life and taught her children the value of hard work and perseverance. Despite her large family, she made time for everyone, always willing to listen, providing guidance and wisdom. Dorothy was a bright light, loved by many and was the matriarch of the Baker family. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Hagerstown Church of Christ. She cherished Sunday mornings, which she dedicated to faith and family. Her faith was underscored by her eternal optimism, and unwavering trust in the Lord - even during the most difficult times.

Dorothy is survived by her five children, Nancy L. Castle and husband, Johnny, LuAnn B. Wells and husband, Jim, David R. Baker and wife, Shawna, Dwight C. Baker, and Steven H. Baker and wife, Dina; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four daughters, Carolyn M. Baker Eccard, Gloria J. Baker, Julian D. Baker, and Angela C. Baker; four sons, Alvey S. Baker, Jr., Roger L. Baker, Michael B. Baker, Sr., and Charles D. Baker; her grandson, Gregory Cole Jr.; two brothers, John Slick and Charles Omar Slick; and two sisters, Mary Catherine Slick and Catherine May Pitts.

A staggered viewing will be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 27th at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home in Boonsboro.

Funeral services will be held on the morning of Thursday, May 28th at Hagerstown Church of Christ, 10014 White Hall Road.

A private graveside service will be held immediately following services at the family’s cemetery plot at Benevola United Methodist Church in Boonsboro.
