Dorothea Betty "Dot" Long, 88, formerly of Hagerstown, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. She and her late husband, Vaughn Long, later moved to the DC suburbs in Burtonsville, Maryland.
Born on October 3, 1928, in Funkstown, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John Earl and Lillian (Miller) Divens.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Hagerstown. Dot worked several jobs, among her favorites were: Washington County Hospital Nurses Aid, Doctors Hospital, Little Sister's of the Poor in Washington, DC, S & S Mailing Company then later in life Calverton Cleaners. Having mentored at Frances Fuchs Early Childhood Center in Beltsville, Maryland, she was loved by both the staff and children who affectionately referred to her as Mrs. Long.
Dot was loved by all. A sweet, loving, gentle, helpful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who touched many lives. She loved working with children, having cared for several children through the years. Dot loved her family, faith, friends, and trips to Ocean City, Myrtle Beach and Deep Creek Lake. Through the years, she loved visiting family in Southern California and Pennsylvania.
Dot enjoyed needle point, quilt making, reading, the holidays and visiting with family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Wallace and her husband, Charlie; her grandchildren, Laurie Miller and her husband, Tommy and Charles Wallace, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Cathy, Jesse, Amber, Allyson and her husband Cody, Shanel and James; and great-great grandchildren, Bradley, Zeppelin, Hayden and Jack.
Dot will be greatly missed by all!
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. A celebration of Dot's life journey will be held immediately following visitation at 2 p.m. The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin, Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Beaver Creek Cemetery in Hagerstown.
