Doris Marion MacGregor Taylor, 89, of Mount Airy died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 following a brief illness. Born November 20, 1922 in Carlisle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Florence Stambaugh MacGregor. She was the wife of the late Olin Wells Taylor, her husband of 65 years who died June 22, 2009.
Doris was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy and the AFB Sunday School class. She also enjoyed participating in the activities of the OWLS, Calvary’s senior adults. She made many friends in the Water Aerobics and Aqua Zumba classes at Health Unlimited, faithfully exercising five to six days a week and enjoyed playing cards with the group at the Senior Center. After retirement, Doris and her husband enjoyed traveling and going on cruises and she continued to take bus trips with various groups until her illness. For many years, she was an avid gardener and was active in her town’s Garden Club. Doris was always an accomplished seamstress and also enjoyed knitting, including making baby hats for the newborns at a nearby hospital. She made crafts for holidays, often giving them to friends. Although Doris held several interesting jobs during her marriage, she was most proud of her role as wife, mother, and later grandmother and great-grandmother.
Doris is survived by her son, Dr. Jeffrey L. Taylor and wife Debra of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Matthew C. Taylor and his fiancée Stephanie LeBrun of Frederick, Allison Taylor Bolling and husband Troy of Baltimore, and Michelle Taylor of Mount Airy; and great-granddaughters Carriemarie and Aubrey Bolling. She is also survived by a sister, Florence Alice Sultzaberger, of Mechanicsburg, PA and several nieces and nephews.
Doris will be fondly remembered by loyal friends in Georgia where she lived for 45 years prior to her move to Mount Airy in 2009. She will be greatly missed by those with whom she formed more recent friendships, including her special friend, Robert Wagner.
Doris was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce MacGregor, Jr. and Charles MacGregor and sister-in-law, Denise MacGregor.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1 at Stauffer Funeral Home in Mount Airy. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church, Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jennifer Karsner officiating. According to her wishes, Doris was cremated and interment will take place at a later date in Andersonville National Cemetery in Georgia.
