Doris Murray

March 4, 1918 — November 27, 2017

Doris Murray, age 99, died November 27, 2017, at her home.

Born March 4, 1918 on a dairy farm, she was the daughter of the late Arthur T Murray and Elsie Ryan Murray. She began her career at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel). Later she worked in Baltimore as a medical secretary. She retired in 1982 and returned to Mt. Airy.

She was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church where she served as Chairman of the Worship Committee, President of the Women’s Society, the Women’s Head Usher, and various other committees. She enjoyed being a volunteer whenever called upon.

Doris became a member of the Mt. Airy Garden Club in 1982 and was President from 1997-1999 after having served in other elective offices. The club honored her in 2004 by presenting a Life Membership in the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland. On March 17, 2011 she received an Honorary Membership in the Mt. Airy Garden Club in recognition of her dedicated participation in the club. From 1982 to 2013 she hosted the committee responsible for the town decorations at Christmas, which included creating a 6-foot wreath to adorn the library. She was an outdoors person and continued to do her yard work and gardening until the age of 96.

She developed an appreciation for classical music while working at the college and took advantage of the opportunity to attend the operas and symphonies while living in Baltimore. This provided her with many hours of enjoyment over the years.

Doris is survived by a brother-in-law, Donald Clarke, and five nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roland R Murray and two sisters, Madeline A Murray and Jean Murray Clarke.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Calvary United Methodist Church at ten o’clock. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary UMC, 403 South Main St, Mt. Airy, MD 21771.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Mt. Airy and Stauffer Crematory, Frederick. Online condolences may be expressed at staufferfuneralhome.com
