Mrs. Doris A. McFadden, 91, died Thursday, December 6, 2012, surrounded by family members at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick. She was the wife of the late, James Richard McFadden, who predeceased her in May 2005 at age 82. They had been married 61 years.
Born December 18, 1920 in Alexandria, Va., Mrs. McFadden was the second of eight children of the late Benjamin P. and Dolly M. Allen. After graduating from Alexandria's George Washington High School, she attended Averett College in Danville, VA, with the help of a grant from her church.
On September 14, 1943, she married J. Richard McFadden of Alexandria, a career employee of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railway. Together, they raised and educated three children. Doris and Dick were lifelong Baptists and were active in the choral music programs of every church they attended, including First Baptist Church of Alexandria; Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond, VA; and First Baptist Church of Frederick.
As their children approached college age, Mrs. McFadden went to work as an executive secretary for the assistant city manager of Alexandria, and later for the assistant city manager of Richmond. After her husband retired in 1987, they moved from Richmond to Frederick to be closer to their young grandchildren.
Mrs. McFadden is survived by three children, Michael G. McFadden of Lanham; two daughters, Judith H. McFadden of Frederick, and Nancy L. McFadden and husband, John Richards, of Springfield, VA.
