Doris Hutton

Doris Huffer Hutton, 88, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Calusa Harbour Assisted living in Ft Myers, Florida.

Doris was born in Boonsboro, MD on May 12, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Alfred Calvin and Otilia (Pearce) Huffer.

Doris graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1940, Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in 1944 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree, and the College of William and Mary in 1960 with a Masters degree in Elementary School Administration. She taught vocal music at South Potomac Jr. High in Hagerstown, MD and Hampton, VA; and elementary band in Newport News, VA until retirement. She also taught private piano.

She was an ordained Minister of Music in the United Methodist Church and served in that capacity at several churches in Virginia and Ft Myers.

Doris was a primary developer of the Shenandoah Alumni Association and served as president for many years. She was one of several Huffer family members to graduate from Shenandoah over the past 100 years. Doris’ aunt, Vida (Huffer) McAdams graduated in 1909; her father in 1915; and her sister, Eula (Huffer) Swain in 1946. Her influence was substantial as the historic institution moved from a college/conservatory in Dayton, VA to a fully-accredited university in Winchester, VA.

Doris is survived by her husband of 62 years, Henry Hutton of Ft Myers; sister Eula (Huffer) Swain of Williamsport, MD; brother Alfred C. Huffer, Jr. of Delmar, MD; nephew Andreas Huffer; nieces Marcia Swain and Lisa (Huffer) Harbaugh; and several grand nieces and nephews. Doris is also survived by sister-in-law Belle (Hutton) Eutsey of Zellwood, FL.

Memorial Services will be held in Boonsboro, MD on Sunday, July 25 at 4 pm at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home; and at the First United Methodist Church in Ft Myers on Thursday, July 29 at 6 pm. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Boonsboro Cemetery.
