Surrounded by her loving family, the angels came and embraced Donna S. Rice as they carried her Home. She departed from us early Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Donna was born July 5, 1957 in Front Royal, VA. She was the daughter of Mae H. Collum and the late John W. Wine, Sr.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 40 years, Michael A. Rice, Sr.
Donna was energetic, loving and capable of anything and everything she decided to do. In addition to raising her family, she had a long career showing her many talents. Early on she was a babysitter; from there she went into retail and was at the start-up of Bradlee's Dept. Shore and M.J. Designs. After that her career took her to the insurance industry, where she worked for many years for Great West, Lincoln National, MAMSI, and finally with United Healthcare. She began there in October 2001 and was loved by all her co-workers.
Other than her family and friends, her other loves in her life were NASCAR and the beach. During racing season, she so looked forward to the weekends to cheer on Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Then there was the beach - her one dream was to move to Florida and be able to go to the ocean and the beach as much as she wanted.
Donna left an impression on every life she touched. She leaves us a great legacy of love, laughter and friendship. She especially will be remembered by her special friend, Sherry Marsh.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Michael A. Rice, Jr. of Hagerstown; her daughter, Christine A. Hauk and husband, Matthew, of Winter Springs, FL; grandson, Trenton Brady; granddaughter, Taylor Hauk; a brother, John Wine, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Thurmont; a sister, Sharon E. Carson and husband, Charles of Frederick; step-brothers, Carl W. Collum and wife, Vicki, of Waynesboro, PA, and Rob Cloud and wife, Cindy, of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; step-sister, Patty Ann Grizzle and husband, Joe, of Stephens City, VA; one aunt, three uncles, many cousins; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, Carl E. Collum and a nephew, Shawn Wine.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Lewistown United Methodist Church, 11032 Hessong Bridge Rd., Thurmont, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Elza Hurst.
