Mr. Donald Paul Dougherty, Sr., 80 of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by many family members.
He was the husband of Doris J. Nunemaker Dougherty, his wife of 57 years.
Born October 18, 1928 in Woodsboro, MD., he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Lula M. Fogle Dougherty.
Donald started out selling cars for Creager Motor Co. in 1950 which later became Redding Chevrolet/Oldsmobile then Wilhide Chevrolet.
They then bought the Chevrolet Franchise and moved to the present location. In June of 1966 the dealership became known as Stull-Dougherty Chevrolet. During his working career Donald won numerous sales awards from General Motors. He was a life member of the Guardian Hose Co. of Thurmont and the Thurmont Community Ambulance Co. He enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and NASCAR racing. He also enjoyed visiting the guys at Direct To You Gas Station.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Donald P. Dougherty, Jr of Mt. Airy and Renee Rousseau, two sisters Vivian Kline and husband Bud of Woodsboro and Virginia Schildt and husband Howard of Thurmont, many nieces, nephews, cousins and special neighbors Linda and Bill Plumley. He will also be remembered by his many friends and customers at the dealership.
He was preceded in death by a brother John R. Dougherty.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont on Thursday, April 2, from 3 - 5 and 7 - 9 p.m.
Services:
Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, April 3, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jeff Gehris officiating.
Interment Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.
Active pallbearers will be Buddy Bostain, Jim Bostain, Donald Fuss, Dick Stambaugh, Bill Plumley and Bern Sweeney. Honorary bearer will be Elmer Dick Fuss.
Contributions may be expressed to the Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont and the Thurmont Community Ambulance Service.
