Mr. Donald Edwin Eaves passed away Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at the age of 89.
Born and raised in Walkersville, MD , Donald called this home until 2001 when he moved to Ocean City to reside with family in his final years.
Born November 9th, 1919, he was the son of the late Thomas Eaves and Florence (Biddinger ) Eaves.
He was preceded in death 14 years earlier by his beloved wife of 52 years, Margaret ( Handley ) Eaves.
Donald was a graduate of Walkersville High School where he also served as Class President.
After high school he was employed by Harris and Filler Wholesale Grocers of Frederick for 17 years. During this time he served two years with the Maryland State Guard from 1941 to 1943, his final year with Special Military Police. In 1944 he was appointed Special Policeman for the State of Maryland. Donald completed his military career by serving in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. He was honorably discharged as a Field Staff Sargent in charge of training. Following his employ with Harris and Filler, Donald worked 27 years for Sunshine Biscuit Company. Never one to stay idle he also worked 20 years for Stauffer Funeral Homes. At age 81 he finally decided to retire.
Mr. Eaves was a charter and life member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company # 11, a life member of the Frederick Independent Hose Company, a member of Walkersville Rescue Company # 24, and a member of the American Legion. He also enjoyed his involvement with the Walkersville Senior Citizens and attended both the Walkersville United Methodist Church and the Mount Pleasant Reformed United Church of Christ.
In his younger years Donald served as president of the Glade Valley Athletic Association for 2 years. He also assisted with Walkersville Boy Scout Troop 1056.
Throughout his life Donald was an avid outdoorsman with a strong love for hunting, fishing, and especially his Beagles.
Traveling was also a hobby he enjoyed sharing with his wife and family.
Most importantly Donald will be remembered as a generous man to friends and family alike, always placing the well-being of others before his own. His strong beliefs in faith, family and community will certainly live on for generations to come.
Surviving are his son Robert D. Eaves and wife Gloria ( Karn ) Eaves of New Windsor, his daughter Patricia M. Currence and husband Richard Currence of Ocean City, four grandchildren; Cynthia Eaves Graham and husband Jim, Jefferson Eaves and wife Megan, Jenny Wallace and husband Scott, Jamie Snyder, three great-grandchildren; Jackson Robert Eaves, Jordan Lee Eaves, and James ( Jay ) Graham 5th.
He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to his wife Margaret, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Eaves. The youngest of ten children he was also preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters; Allen, Nelson, Clarence, Charles, Paul, Walter, Eva, Evelyn and Ruth.
Visitation: Family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Sunday, February 8th, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Services: Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. At the Walkersville United Methodist Church, 22 Main St., Walkersville with Rev. Mark L. Foucart and Rev. Albert K. Lane III officiating. Interment in Glade cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Walkersville Rescue Co. # 21 or Walkersville Fire Department.
