Donald Crawford, 94 resident of Buckingham Choice died April 16. 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb 9, 1920, Don was the son of the late James Crawford and Blanche Polleau. He grew up in the Philadelphia area and spent summers in Europe with his French mother and grandparents. Don attended Washington and Lee University 1939-1941 until drafted into the army. He graduated from the Univ. of Va. after the war in 1947.
Entering the Army in 1941, Don was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division as a tank commander. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy in June 1944. He participated in 5 campaigns in Europe, reaching the Elbe River in April 1945. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He was decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor.
Home from the war, Don married Anita Monger of Harrisonburg, Va. in 1945. The couple lived in Charlottesville VA and Frederick Md. They raised 3 daughters. Anita passed away in 1996.
Don was employed at State Farm Insurance, first as an Underwriting Superintendent and later as Director of Management and Planning. He received his C.P.C.U. and C. L. U. during his employment. He also became a Certified Financial Consultant.
He retired in 1985, became a certified scuba diver, joined the Masters swim team, served on the Planned Gifts committee at Frederick Hospital and traveled extensively. Don was an avid swimmer, golfer, and hiker. Don spoke fluent French and was a member of Alliance Francaise.
He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Wheelock and husband George, 3 daughters. Kitty Brown and husband John, Jeanne Puglisi and Jackie Crawford, 3 grandchildren Don Puglisi and wife Anna, Sarah Brown and Matthew Brown and one great-granddaughter Siena Puglisi.
There will be a Memorial Service for Don on Saturday May 3 at 2 pm at Buckingham Choice 3200 Baker Circle, Buckeystown, Md.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Frederick Memorial Hospital.
