Donald Grayson Weddle, 88, lifelong resident of Thurmont, passed away on February 23 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Pat, of 62 years.
Born November 16, 1926, he was the son of Curtis Ray and Beulah Troxell Weddle. Don graduated from Thurmont High, Class of 1943. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy and served on a destroyer escort during WWII. After serving in the Navy, he joined the U.S. Postal Service where he worked until retiring from the Thurmont Post Office in 1985.
Don was a dedicated, lifelong member of Apples United Church of Christ in Thurmont. He was also a life member of Guardian Hose Company, American Legion Post 168, a charter member of AmVets Post 7, and a volunteer driver for the Thurmont Senior Center. He was one of the founding members of the Thurmont Ambulance Co., using the Creager hearse at that time.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by son David Weddle and wife Dawn; daughter Wendy Cassidy and husband Tom; grandchildren Kelly Sweet (Mike), Jennifer Weddle (Jake Bivens), Matthew Weddle, Alex Cassidy (fiancé Jessica), and Jessica Quill (David) ; great-grandchildren Adelyn, Karoline, and Emily Sweet, Alaina Quill, and Eli Rose. He was predeceased by great-grandson Charlie Quill.
He is also survived by brother Jerry Weddle (Linda), sister-in-law Pat Fogle Weddle, brother-in-law Bill Dellinger, many special nieces and nephews, and dear friend Susan Smith.
Don was predeceased by siblings Reggie, C. Ray, and James Weddle, Shirley Wellinghurst, Peggy Dellinger, and Barbara Freeze.
The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 11:00 - 12:00, after which a celebration of Don’s life will follow at 12:00 noon.
