Mr. Donald "Don" C. Smith 87 of Brunswick, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Citizen Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Vida "Muzzy" Smith who passed away in 1982.
Born January 5, 1927 in Bolivar, WV he was the son of the late Charles and Nellie Smith.
After graduating from Brunswick High School in 1944, he went to work for the B&O Railroad as a machine apprentice. That fall he enlisted in the US Maritime Service and sailed in the Merchant Marines on various ships until November 1946. While serving he lost two Liberty ships, one when the fuel tanks exploded and the other was rammed and sunk outside of New York Harbor.
Returning to Brunswick after his discharge, he completed apprenticeship, was trained for and promoted to Diesel Electric Supervisor for the B&O Railroad. During this time he married longtime love, Vida Taylor and they had their daughter Sandra Sue. He continued to work on the railroad until 1959, with only a two year break from1951-1953 when he was drafted into the Marine Corp.
In 1959 he went to work for the US government at Mount Weather as an Electric Power Controller until 1986 when he retired as Diesel Power Supervisor.
Don was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Brunswick and he was the oldest living member of the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department.
He was also a member of the Brunswick Masonic Lodge for over 64 years, the Shriners International, Brunswick American Legion, Life Member of the AMVETS Frederick Post #2, Brunswick Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose in Charlestown, WV.
He is survived by his daughter Sandra Sue Naille of Brunswick, his sister, Virginia Tritapoe of Easton, two grandchildren, Stacy Richardson and husband Mike of Anderson, SC and Christopher Naille and wife Mandy of Frederick, one great granddaughter Zoie Mae Richardson.
He is preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Wayne Smith and his brother, Jack Smith.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 North Maple Ave., Brunswick on Thursday, June 5th from 6:00-8:00PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 6th at 11:00AM with Rev. Katie Bishop officiating.
Interment will be in Park Heights Cemetery, Brunswick.
