Donald Reddick, distinguished educator and devoted family man, died peacefully in his sleep on July 30th. He was 80 years old.
Know as Dr. Reddick, Don, Dad, and Dides, he will be remembered and celebrated for his remarkable kindness and dignity, gentle sense of humor, formidable work ethic, and unflagging optimism. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. He was often surrounded by his wife of 58 years Jean, his daughters Linda and Nancy, son-in-law Rick Brainerd (husband to Linda), and grandchildren Gina, Peter, and Cara.
He was happiest and most at peace when his loved ones were right where he could see them, and went to sleep every night having checked in on everyone.
He was the consummate educator, beginning his career with a teaching job and eventually becoming a lauded principal of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland. Described by the Washington Post as tall, lean, and liberal, he was hailed as a student's principal, creating policies and programs that allowed students to take a leadership role in their own educations. After his retirement in 1981 WJHS named the auditorium after him. His dedication to education was apparent by his service as president of Montgomery County Education Association, as well as teaching at George Washington University.
In his later years, he used the same courage and tenacity that made him a beloved principal to battle health problems. His family, along with various doctors and nurses, were continually in awe of his perseverance and incredible positive mind set and dedication to getting better. He taught us all how to age, how to live, and how to love.
Services: A service celebrating his life will be held at Buckingham' Choice, 3200 Baker Circle Adamstown, Maryland 21710, Monday, August 4, 2:00 p.m.
