Donald Fiol

Donald "Don" Norris Fiol , 82, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed from this life on Monday, December 16, 2013 at his place of residence.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris (Pugh) Fiol.

Born on September 13, 1931, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late John Norris and Martha (Bell) Fiol.  He was a graduate from Thomas Edison High School.  Don also attended the Maryland Institute of Art and Columbia Union College, where his field of study included history and theology.  He served in the United States Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer First Class during the Korean War era.

Don began his professional career as a Window Dresser at many major department stores.  He was a skilled artist, employed by the B & O Railroad.  His artistic talents allowed him the opportunity to work as a conservator, painting many of the Railroad's historic passenger cars, including the passenger car used by Abraham Lincoln during his lifetime.  He also worked construction at his father's construction firm.  For a time he worked as an Graphic Artist with the Review and Herald Publishing Association in the Art Department.  Later in his career, he worked as a Sales Representative for Worthington Foods and with the Matrix Company in the sales of health foods and health related products.

Don remained an artistic painter throughout his life.  He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles.  Don enjoyed singing and was a member of a quartet in Baltimore and was a member of the Review and Herald Men's Chorus.  He worked as a Youth Director with the Pathfinders Scouting Group.  Above all, he especially loved spending time with his family.

Don was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Deborah Mangum and husband, Nathan of Hagerstown; his sister Patricia Fiol-Morrill and husband, William Kelso, Jr. of Timonium, Maryland. and by four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Fiol-Fraley; his grandson, Derrick Niewiadomsky; and his sister, Shirley Smith.

A funeral ceremony will be held at the Willowbrook Seventh Day Adventist Church, 8916 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, Maryland at 12:00 noon on Friday, December 20, 2013.  A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.  Elder Timothy Crosby will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Brownsville Heights Cemetery in Knoxville, Maryland.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.
