Richard "Dick" Shinnick

Richard "Dick" Shinnick, 88, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at his residence. He was married to Janet Marie Shinnick who died in 2013 for 51 years. Born on March 20, 1936, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Larry R. Shinnick and Sylvia Smyth Shinnick.

Dick or Mr. Wonderful, as he was affectionately known as, was a proud veteran who served twice in the U.S. Army. Dick retired from the Dept. of Health and Human Services in Rockville and was also a popular softball umpire ( as well as Umpire and Chief) in the Maryland and DC area for more than 45 years. Dick was known for his infectious smile, outlandish humor, friendly banter, and lavish and captivating story telling. He cherished spending time with his family, his very special friend, Inez Thomas, as well as his countless friends. He will truly be missed by all those who knew him. 

He is survived by three children: Lorraine Sexton of Mt. Airy, Richard Shinnick, Jr. and wife Lori of Olney, and Lynn Paul and husband Shaun of Mt. Airy; five grandchildren: Taylor Sexton, Jeffrey Sexton, Zachary Sexton, Steven Paul and Kelly Paul; two great grandchildren: Ella Sexton and Aubrey Sexton; a sister Barbara Fitzurka of Bowie; sister-in-law Nancy Britton and husband Kenny of North Carolina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville in Mt. Airy, MD.

A luncheon will be served from 11:30 to 1:00 PM in the church hall at St. Michael Catholic Church at Poplar Springs, 1125 St. Michael's Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771, where a Memorial Mass will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 21, 2024. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Catholic Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy, MD.
