Dennis L. "Denny" Shaffer , 77, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Lorien in Mount Airy, Maryland.

Born on January 30, 1940, in Bloomsburg, PA, he was the son of the late Paul and F. Arlene (Schultz) Shaffer.

Denny retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after nearly 23 years of service. He worked for a Federal Government Contractor as an engineer until his retirement in January, 2002.

He was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in Mt. Airy.

He was a disassembler of things electronic and then re-assembled them. Denny loved to read, the Redskins and watching tennis and golf on the television. He was a talented artist who loved drawing and painting. He was the family photographer and loved to take pictures.

He is survived by wife of 53 years, Beverly A. Shaffer of Mt. Airy; a son, Dennis Paul Shaffer and wife, Carol, of Mt. Airy; a daughter, Victoria L. Gates of Frederick; two sisters, Beverly (Ron) Flory of Ocala, FL and Paula (James) Samselski of Nanicoke, PA; five brothers, Robert (Patricia) Shaffer of Merchantsville, NJ, Wilbur (Sharon) Shaffer of Bloomsburg, PA, Randal (Carol) Shaffer of Jacksonville, FL, Scott (Joyce) Shaffer of Warrenton, VA and Blaine (Sandra) Shaffer of Sunbury, PA; four grandchildren, Krystle, Kasey, Angela and Bradly; and one great-grandchild, Addison; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Denny was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Jean in July 1990.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville in Mt. Airy, MD. Prayers are to begin at 6:30 Sunday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, August 28th at the St. Michael Catholic Church, 1125 St. Michael's Road in Mt. Airy with Rev. Michael J. Ruane officiating. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Mt. Airy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camp Jamie, 516 Trail Avenue, Frederick, MD 21702 or on the Hospice of Frederick County's website at www.hospiceoffrederick.org.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Stauffer Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
