Dean Purvis

Dean Charles Purvis, 64, of Frederick, Maryland, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

Born on August 22, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry and Betty (Mayo) Purvis.

Dean worked for the United States Capitol  Police in Washington D.C. for thirty 31 years and spent 25 of those years on the Bomb Squad Unit, retiring in 2007. After retirement, he worked in Rockville, Maryland as a Bailiff for a few years and did background investigations for security clearances.  For the last 5 years, he had worked for U.S. Customs and the Border Protection Advanced Training Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  Dean had just retired from Customs, but decided to work a few days a month.  During his retirement, he had planned to play golf and travel with his wife and grandchildren.

Dean was a friendly and outgoing person.  He enjoyed playing golf, going to Ocean City, and spending time with his family.  Dean was a caring, kind person.  He loved children, pets and enjoyed "Life."  Life was a better place with Dean Purvis in it.
Dean's family would like to thank the Cancer Care Center in Frederick, with special thanks to his Oncologist, Dr. Yun Oh.  Also, they would like to thank Dr. Eric Bush and his staff from the Pain and Supportive Care Services for everything they did for him and the family.  The  family would also like to thank Dr. Andrew Donelson, his primary care physician for the special care he received during his illness.  Lastly, the family thanks Hospice of Frederick County for the wonderful care and assistance they gave  to the family.

Dean is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Rita T. Purvis; his daughter, Lindsey S. Swinford of Frederick; his daughter-in-law, Jackie Swinford of Hagerstown, Maryland; his two grandsons, Dimitri and Nick Swinford of Hagerstown; and a sister, Colette Buckley and her husband, Joe, of Swanee, Georgia.  He is also survived by his two nieces, Elizabeth Bryant and Stephanie Roman of Hagerstown, Indiana; and his three nephews, Daniel, David, and Colin Buckley.

In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his son, James "Jamey" R. Swinford; and his brother, Dale Purvis.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland  21702.  Rev. Gary Hicks will officiate.  Final resting-place ceremonies will be held privately.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
