Dawn Barfield

June 30, 1927 — February 5, 2011

Mrs. Dawn Eason Barfield, 83, of Frederick and formerly of Smyrna, Ga., came to peace on Feb 5, 2011 at Glade Valley Center, Walkersville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James Henry Barfield. Born June 30, 1927 in Blackwell, Cobb County, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late William Austin Eason and Lucile Gunnin Eason.

Dawn attended the University of Georgia in 1944 and returned home in 1945 to marry her high school sweetheart, the late James Lester Nash.

She worked in private industry, and retired from the Federal Government with 31 years of service. She received numerous job performance awards, and in 1984 received the national award as Outstanding Disabled Employee of the Year by the Department of Health and Human Services. She served as the Chairperson of the National Disabled Employees Advisory Committee.

Dawn was a survivor of the poliomyelitis epidemic in 1951. She initially recovered from paralysis, but suffered the onset of post-polio syndrome around 1980.

She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Wyndell Duggan; son-in-law Daniel Joseph Duggan; grandson, James Daniel Duggan and wife, Mary Bergstrom Duggan; Christine Gunnin Prather, aunt and sister of the heart. Numerous relatives reside in Georgia, Virginia, and California. She will be remembered by special friends Shirene Montgomery, Pat Doyle, and Kawelolelani Fargie.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.8, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9. Interment will be held in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
