Mr. David Philip Wellen, 64, of Middletown, MD, died Monday, February 17, 2014 at his home. He was the loving husband of 31 years to Susan Wellen.
Born December 24, 1949 in Marlborough, MA, he was the son of the late Albert A. and M. Doris Brodeur Wellen.
David graduated from Tulane University in 1972 with two Bachelor degrees, then had several years of continuing education in Pre-Med coursework.
David had a long and distinguished military career with the U.S. Navy spanning from 1969-1997, during which time he was Commissioned in 1980, with a career that has included numerous commendations. His career took him all around the world including serving in the Gulf. He received decorations such as the Navy Achievement Medal with three Gold Stars, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and two Kuwait Liberation Medals.
From the time of his retirement, David was the well-respected Equipment Manager for the now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
David always enjoyed sailing, gardening, hiking, traveling, cooking, reading (especially history), handyman projects, and spending time with family. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sydney Taylor and husband, Jeff, of Harpers Ferry, WV, and their 9-month old daughter, Brooklyn; his son, Tyler Wellen and wife, Emily, of Frederick, MD; and his sister, Michelle Wellen of Princeton, MA.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD.
Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
