Dr. David James Munroe, of Walkersville, passed away on Wednesday June 14th at the age of 60, He grew up in Medfield Massachusetts and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts where he competed on the football team. He received his doctorate in Genomics from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester and completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research brought him to San Diego and then to SAIC/Leidos in Frederick for cancer and genetic research. He authored over 100 scientific papers and mentored numerous doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students and was always willing to help further other's careers.. He was responsible for the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) license and was a passionate and enthusiastic scientist.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Condon Munroe, his father Dr. William David Munroe and his sister Lauryl Munroe. He is survived by his daughter Elia Goffi, his ex-wife Judy Goffi, his brother Scott Munroe, niece Abigail Munroe and nephew William Munroe and his brother Brad Munroe.
He was an avid hiker, camper and explorer of the wilderness and the study of science. He is remembered by all with love and gratitude for his many gifts.
Private celebrations of life will honor him at Gambrill Park, Frederick and also at Medfield Massachusetts and Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Donations can be made to a favorite charity or to the Baltimore Human Society considering his love for animals.
