David Gilbert

David Gilbert passed away on April 20, 2025 in Frederick, Maryland.
David was born on September 17, 1948 in Des Plaines, Illinois to Arthur and Marion Gilbert. He was the second of four siblings and spent his formative years at the St. Mary's Parochial School.

Thanks to the many prayers of the nuns and his beloved mother, David graduated from Notre Dame Prepartory School in Niles, Illinois and went on to study business at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. While in Minnesota, he met Camille Comas. They married after graduation and moved to Washington, DC, where Camille served as an Army nurse at Walter Reed. David began working as a Budget Analyst at the U.S. Department of the Interior. 

He would continue this career for over 35 years, serving as Budget Officer and becoming the Department's recognized expert in management of Indian Affairs and trust programs. 

David and Camille moved to Columbia, Maryland in 1976 to raise their children. Even after their marriage ended, they continued to work on together as parents to Brian and Kari as they grew. David soon found a spiritual and supportive community of friends in the SWORD group at St. John the Evangelist parish in Columbia, helping to grow and expand the group and making many lifelong friends. 

His new friends encouraged him to begin dating again and he soon found his soulmate of the past 34 years in Marilys Fernandez. David and Marilys were married in 1991 surrounded by an abundance of family and friends. After spending many years traveling to their weekend home at The Woods Resort in Hedgesville, West Virginia, they decided they needed to enjoy the peace and serenity of the mountains full-time. 

David kept busy running the Men's Golf League, reading and gardening in his later years. He could often be found supervising the 16th green from his back porch. In addition to his wife Marilys, David is survived by his children, Brian and wife Trish of Mountain View California, and Kari and husband Ross of Billings, Montana; four grandchildren, Wyatt, Eleanor, Brady and Finn; his three siblings Michael, Joanne and Janet. 

A Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. 2nd St. Frederick, Maryland 2170.
