On Thursday, April 11, 2024, Concetta Regina Schulien, loving wife of the late John Joseph Schulien, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, passed away at the age of 85 at Olney Assisted Living surrounded by family. Born on February 13, 1939 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Anthony Cinotti and Mary (Anastasi) Cinotti.
Concetta grew up on Capitol Hill in a row house on C Street N.E. among dozens of her close-knit Italian relatives who lived a few doors down before the families moved to the Prince George’s County suburbs in the late 1950s. She attended St. Joseph’s School on Capitol Hill and graduated from St. Cecilias Academy high school. She was a star for the St. Joseph girls basketball team and the lead singer of the all-girl band “The Goofers” in high school. She worked as a secretary for Retail Clerks Union in D.C. before meeting and quickly marrying the love of her life, John, a U.S. Marine from Lima, Ohio stationed at the 8th & I Marine Corps Barracks, on January 9, 1960. The young couple met while cruising at the popular Mighty Mo drive-in restaurant in Hyattsville, MD.
Concetta and John settled down in Wheaton, MD where they raised three sons and two daughters. She was very active at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church where she sent her children to school, sang in the Choir, led the teen club, coached CYO girls softball, and was a Eucharistic minister just to name a few. She was a successful real estate agent and real estate investor part-time while staying home to raise her young family. Family was everything for Concetta…and nothing was more precious than racing to and from overlapping grandchild activities, and spending family time at her cherished beach house at Bethany Beach - a tradition that her children and grandchildren continue.
Concetta is survived by her children: Anthony Schulien (Kathleen), Cathleen Richards (Matthew), Dorothy Raleigh (Kevin), John Schulien, Jr. (Catherine), Thomas Schulien (Lyric) and Cindy Parker (Tim); grandchildren: Sean Raleigh (Emily), Anthony Schulien, Brendan Raleigh (Nicole), Jennifer Moxley, Michael Schulien, Tyler Richards, Jeffrey Moxley, Ryan Schulien, Thomas Schulien, Jr., Matthew Moxley, Mia Schulien, Amanda Schulien, Megan Schulien, Dylan Richards, Tiffany Parker, Chad Parker, and Emily Richards. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Stephen Raleigh, Colin Raleigh, Patrick Raleigh, and Maya Parker, as well as her brother, John Cinotti.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Pasco and her husband Lawrence, her sister-in-law, Patricia Cinotti, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Jordan and her husband, Ott.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Road, Ijamsville, MD 21754. Interment will be at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to support the Alzheimer’s Association in Concetta’s honor and/or participation in the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s
