Col. James Acklin, III (US Army, Ret.)

June 17, 1940 — March 26, 2015

Colonel James Montgomery Acklin, III (U.S. Army Ret.), 74, of Adamstown, MD died surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Washington Hospital Center. He was the loving husband of Rebecca Katchka Acklin for fifty-one years. Born on June 17, 1940 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Eleanor (Taylor) and James. M. Acklin, Jr.
Jim was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.  He earned his MS in Nuclear Physics from Tulane university and his MA in International Relations from USC.  He retired from the United States Army after 24 years on active duty and later became founder and director of System Health Enterprises.  He was involved in many veterans groups, professional organizations, and the community of Buckingham's Choice.  He was an Eagle Scout and was the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 654, the Mt. Vernon, Virginia honor troop.  He worked as district chairman, district commissioner and was on the executive staff of the Mt. Vernon District of the Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dr. J. Thomas Acklin of Arlington, VA; his daughter, Amy Beech of New Market, MD; three grandchildren, Rebecca Beech, Elizabeth Beech, and Casey Acklin; and two sisters, Catherine Kontak of Texas and Adelaide Keiser of Arizona.
A Celebration of Jim's life will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Buckingham's Choice, 3200 Baker Circle, Adamstown, MD 21710.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or Hospice of Frederick, MD.
