Mr. Clement Edward Gardiner III, 91, passed from this life on Saturday May 19, 2012 at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick, MD. Born at Auburn near Catoctin Furnace on July 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Clement Edward Gardiner, Jr. and Margaret McPherson Gardiner.
A 1938 graduate of Millbrook School, Millbrook, NY and in 1942 of Princeton University, he joined the USNR in July of 1940 and entered active duty in June 1942. During WW II he was Chief Engineer of LST 961 serving in the Pacific theater. Leaving active duty in Dec 1945, LCDR Gardiner retired from the reserves in 1965.
Upon returning to civilian life Mr. Gardiner was an instructor in English at Clemson University; Managing Editor, Eastern Breeder magazine; a DJ at radio station WFMD; raised beef cattle on the family farm near Thurmont; from 1953 to 1963 he worked at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown where he became Chief, Engineering Reliability and Specifications; in 1963 he worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in the Test and Evaluation Division; he then joined the Potomac Edison Co. where he retired in 1983 as Director of Public Affairs; from 1987 to 1993 he was Principal, Carnahan, Felton, Gardiner, Inc., public affairs consultants.
During his life he was a faithful member of Catoctin Episcopal Parish and served as lay reader, senior warden, treasurer, organist, member of the Diocesan Council and first president of the Frederick Regional Council of Episcopal Churches. Active and able in community affairs he served as member of the Board of Directors, Frederick and Hagerstown Chambers of Commerce; member Board of Education of Frederick County;  advisor, Frederick County planning and Zoning Commission; member Board of Directors, Frederick County Landmarks Foundation; Chairman, Governor’s Council on Toxic Substances; Chairman, Maryland Electric Utility Council; Chairman Educational Services Committee of the Edison Electric Institute; President, Frederick Arts Center Foundation (Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center); President, Catoctin Furnace Historical Society.
He was the husband of Harriet Ann Orth Gardiner whom he married on July 29, 1944. In addition to his wife he is survived by sons, Clement E. IV, Christopher O., Alexander M., and David B. Gardiner all of Thurmont; three grandchildren, Lalena J. Rose and husband Daniel of Winchester, OH., Clement E. Gardiner V of Reston, VA and Laura E. Gardiner of Baltimore; a brother, Robert M. Gardiner and wife Elizabeth of Far Hills, NJ; three great-grand children and by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday May 26, 2012 at Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish, 12625 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, MD 21788. The Reverend Sally Joyner-Giffin will officiate. Internment will follow in Harriet Chapel Memorial Gardens.
