Mrs. Clara Irene Smith-Toney, 87, of Frederick, Maryland, peacefully passed on March 27, 2017 at Glade Valley Center nursing home in Walkersville, MD, where she was a resident for the past two years.
Born on the family farm on September 29, 1928 in Ijamsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Daisy Odessa Haines and Raymond Jefferson McDonough.
She was the wife of her beloved second husband Harvey Toney.
She was a member of South End Baptist church.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, and eating good country food, but above all valued hard work and loyalty from those around her. An unconventional woman of her time, she was a welder during the 1970’s and 80’s, not only working beside men, but supervising them. She was also able to outwork them, having the scars to show for it.
Preceded in death by first husband Austin Montgomery Smith, siblings Raymond Edward McDonough, Franklin Luther McDonough, Nettie Louise McDonough Moxley, and children Bonnie Irene Smith and Robert Allan Smith, Sr.
Survived by her younger sister Pauline G. Cosgrave, of Hagerstown, MD, and her children and grandchildren. As well as her niece, Wanda Dennis, and her child and grandchild. And a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was the beloved grandmother of Tiffany Monnier and her children, Brittany, Brandon, Bonnie, and Nadia Monnier; Robert Smith, Jr. and his children, Joanne, Jacob, Jeremiah, Luke, and Robert III; Robert Moreno, Jr. and his children, Leif, Ian, and Alyssa; and Nicole Hoffman and her children, Savannah, Ethan, and C.J.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Friday March 31, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick, MD. The funeral will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday April 1, 2017 at South End Baptist Church, 506 Carrolton Dr. Frederick. The interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, with a reception for family and friends to follow at South End Baptist Church. Officiating will be Deacon John Ely.
