Clara Regina "Sophie" Butler, 90, of Frederick, MD, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, peacefully at her home. Born August 20, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Rachel Butler. She was preceded in death by brothers, Earlston Butler and John Butler; sisters, Helen Smith and Margaret Butler Tucker; brothers-in-law, John H. Smith, Jr and George Tucker; sisters-in-law Dorothy Butler and Sarah Butler.
Sophie was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School. She went on to graduate from Cosmetology School in 1967. She was a member of both Silver Hill United Methodist Church and Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She worked as a domestic and caregiver to families in Frederick County for over 50 years, and continued to be very close to members of those families until her passing. Clara also worked as a custodian, with her sister Helen, for Frederick County Public Schools for over 25 years. Clara was the matriarch of her family and devoted her life to them and her friends.
Soph, or Sophie, is survived by nephews, John H. Smith, III (Shirley) of Alexandria, VA, Gordon E. Smith of Morristown, NJ, George Tucker, Sr. (Deniece) of Union Bridge, James Norton (Rhonda) of Louisville, KY, and George Norton of Lansing, MI; nieces, Barbara Smith, Rachel Butler, Dorothy Johnson, and Jacqueline Sampson (Garfield) all of Frederick, MD, Marge Henderson, Diana Brown and Brenda Giles all of Libertytown, Joyce Fuller (Larry) and Roberta Graham(George) of Louisville, KY; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, including a special great-niece, Shirlisa Snowden Carroll (William) of Waldorf, MD, and a special great-nephew, William Snowden of Tampa, FL; great-great-nieces and nephews; many cousins; special friends, Ronald Anderson, Grace Patterson, Mildred Nicodemus, Linda and John Blake, Susan and Domenic Dibiase, Karen and Douglas Zweizig, Wendy Thompson, Deveda Coley, and Alice Hall; and many other friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 8th at the funeral home with Rev. Richard Baker officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
