Mrs. Christine Umstead Sharpe, 102, of Frederick, MD passed away Monday April 20, 2015 at Homewood of Crumland Farms.
She was the wife of the late Rev. Ralph M. Sharpe, a former minister of Calvary Methodist Church.
Born November 16. 1912, in Durham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Otie Black and Sallie Hamlin Umstead.
Mrs. Sharpe was a graduate of Duke University, teaching in the North Carolina, Washington, Baltimore and Frederick School districts for 22 years. She served with her husband in churches in McLean, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD and Mt. Airy, MD and Frederick. She remained active in Sunday School, the United Methodist Women, Bible Study, the XYZ’s, and served on numerous committees. She regularly visited the sick, shut-in and lonely. Mrs. Sharpe had been active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Rose Hill Garden Club, the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxilliary, the American Association of University woman, the Retired Teachers of Frederick County, and the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Sharpe was well known in the community for her loving and caring qualities. Her willingness to share her time and energy to help others will remain in the memory of all who knew her. She will be truly missed.
She is survived by two children, Ralph M. Sharpe, Jr., and wife Carol of Houston, TX and Christine S. Strosnider of Berkeley Springs, WV; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sharpe was preceded in death by three brothers, Otis Hamlin, Douglas Randolph, and Jefferson Lee Umstead. She was the last of her immediate family.
A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W. Second Street, Frederick, Sunday, April 26, at 3:00 pm with Rev. Harry C. Cole officiating.
Interment will be private at Mt. Olivet Cemetery
