Charlotte A. Taylor, 95, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away from this life on Monday, June 19, 2017 at Country Meadows of Frederick, Maryland.
Born in 1921, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mary Grace (Doherty) Augherton.
She graduated from Holy Cross Academy in Washington, DC in 1938 and attended the Temple Business School. After working as a stenographer at the Department of State for several years, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1944. Following military service at the Pentagon, she worked as a civilian for the U. S. government in Athens, Greece and Paris, France. While in Paris, she was part of a team consolidating records of U. S. Service members who were buried in France during the war. She and her colleagues balanced this grim task by socializing with a group of American expatriate writers and artists, including humorist Art Buchwald.
Returning home, she married and raised seven children in Arlington and McLean, Virginia. Later, she went back to school and earned a nursing degree from Northern Virginia Community College. She was employed by the Army Research Office, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and retired from the National Institutes of Health.
Following retirement, Charlotte and Al moved to Frederick, where Charlotte served as a volunteer at Frederick Memorial Hospital well into her 80s.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Alford R. Taylor, of Frederick, Maryland; and six children, Alford Taylor, Jr., Carolyn Woodland, Susan Lewis, George Doherty, Paul Taylor, and Alma Taylor-Smyth; a brother, Thomas G. Augherton; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her oldest daughter, Mary Patricia Harman, predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road in Walkersville, MD. Msgr. Richard Murphy will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD.
