Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth Bowins Smallwood, peacefully entered eternal rest on May 24, 2015 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. She was the eighth child of the late Ralph L. (Jack) and Rachel C. Weedon Bowins, born in Frederick, Maryland on May 16, 1943, a lifelong well respected & loved resident Frederick, MD.
She graduated from Lincoln High School, Frederick in 1961. She was a current member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a past member of Sunnyside United Methodist Church. She retired from State Farm Insurance Company and The Adecco Temp Agency; and both in Frederick. She was a long-time member of Order of the Eastern Star, P.H.A., Hope Chapter 52, New Market, MD.
She was the wife of Stewart M. Smallwood, Jr. and she was proud mother of canine daughter Foxie and the love adopted mother of Godchildren: Delores Carroll, Sheila Bowins, Annette Doyle, nephews Paul & John (Stephon) Bowie, and Shayne Bowins; and many of her nieces and nephews and God-children.
She is survived by one sister Nancy L. and one brother John Thomas Bowins, both of Frederick, one brother-in-law William (Harvey) Zeigler, Damascus; and a God sister Carol Disney Smith of Georgia. Two love adopted sisters, Diane Jackson and Carolyn Rollins all of Frederick, a host of God Children throughout. A number of nieces, nephews and cousins; very close friends Marie and Robert Naylor. She was predeceased by 6 sisters and 1 brother and one love-adopted brother Ray Brightful.
Past member of the Sunnyside Gospel Chorus, Gospelettes of Buckeystown, BB Specials, Chorale Ensemble & The Tree of Life, she founded also started many youth groups such as God’s Individuals and Cherub Choir of Sunnyside, Buckeystown Youth Choir & Men’s Choir of Buckeystown Charge. And she played the piano for many other church choirs.
The family will receive friends and family Tuesday, June 2, at 1ST Missionary Baptist Church, Frederick, MD from 10:00-11:00a.m. The funeral service will start at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor LaDelle Brooks will officiate services. Interment will follow immediately after services, at Fairview Cemetery, Frederick.
A fellowship repast will be held at Quinn Social Center.. The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at College View Nursing Center, Frederick Memorial & John Hopkins Hospital. May God bless you all.
