Charles W. Shifler, 76, of Boonsboro, Maryland, died suddenly on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born on May 26, 1933, he was the son of the late Shirley S. and Ellen Mae (Easterday) Shifler.
Mr. Shifler retired in 1993 from the National Institutes of Health where he was employed as a Laboratory Technician.
Charles was a lifelong member of the Benevola United Methodist Church near Boonsboro. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, The American Association of Retired Persons and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees.
Charles was an avid gardener. He loved to travel, having visited all 50 States including some overseas destinations.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley L. (Flair) Shifler of Boonsboro, Maryland; his daughter, Debra L. and her husband Ed Haislip of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Elfleta Reeder of Boonsboro, Maryland; and two brothers, James E. and Woodrow Shifler, both of Boonsboro, Maryland. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Siebert S. Shifler.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2009, at the Benevola United Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Road, Boonsboro, Maryland. Rev. John H. Dean will officiate. Interment will be at the Boonsboro Cemetery.
Friends are invited to visit beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Bast Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
