Charles F. (Chuck) Gibson, Jr.

April 10, 1948 — December 24, 2020

Chuck Gibson,72 of Greencastle, PA, formerly of Mt. Airy, MD, lost his heroic battle with cancer on December 24, 2020, at his sister's home in Mt. Airy, MD, where he spent most of the last year of his life.

Known to many friends and family as Roo, he was born on April 10, 1948, in Washington, DC. He was one of four children born to the late Charles and Marjorie Gibson, Sr. Chuck graduated from Peary High School in Rockville, MD, in 1967, then went on to serve in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid during the Vietnam War.

He learned his love for the Navy and the sea from his father, who also served in the Navy. His time in service was what molded him into the man he became. He was never prouder than he was at that time in his life. He loved nothing more than to share the stories of his time at sea and traveling around the world. During this time, he became a Shellback for crossing the Equator through a shipboard ceremony. He accomplished rounding the Cape of Good Hope, a very treacherous journey. His travels took him around the entire world by sea, with many ports of call.

He enjoyed spending time with other veterans sharing a cold beer and reminiscing at the VFW or the American Legion. He also enjoyed everything having to do with the Chesapeake Bay, from eating crabs and oysters to boating and fishing. Those were some of the happiest times in his life. When he was happy, he laughed with his whole body, and he would smile with such enthusiasm that his eyes became mere slits.
All who knew him could attest to that. Likewise, what he did not like was hard for him to hide. He is survived by his brother Douglas Gibson (Debbie); sisters Connie Adams (Woody, who is deceased), and Kathy Mongold (Bob); three nephews, Doug Gibson, Jr., Buster Adams, Rob Mongold, and two nieces, Elaine Weiskopf, Libby Mongold. Chuck was full of life and was a very kind-hearted man that will be dearly missed by many.

There will be a service at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd., Crownsville, MD on Mon January 4th 11:30 AM

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to IntrepidMuseum.org, Pier 86 W. 46th St. and 12th Ave., New York, NY 10036

“I can imagine a no more rewarding career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: ‘I served in the United States Navy.’” - President John F. Kennedy, August 1, 1963
