Charles "Charlie" Johnson, Jr.

d. July 12, 2014

Charles M. Johnson, Jr. (Charlie) of Frederick passed away on July 12, 2014.  He was the husband of Fannie L. Johnson, his wife of 66 years.  Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of Charles M. and Louise S. Johnson.  He was a graduate of Eastern High School and attended the University of Virginia, Northern Virginia Campus.

Charlie enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Air Cadet Program in 1945, which was the start of his life-long passion for aviation.  Shortly thereafter, the war was winding down and because there was an excess of pilots, he was directed into communications, which became his life-long career.  He was employed by AT&T for almost 39 years, enjoying many transfers and assignments.  One of his most memorable assignments was a four-year stint with the U.S. Air Force “Night Watch” program, a 24-hour airborne command post for the President and Joint Chiefs of Staff in case of national emergency.

His next assignment, which lasted for 20 years, was Chief of AT&T operations at the underground facility near Blue Ridge Summit, PA, for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  Immediately before his retirement, he supported the NASA Communications Division related to space shuttle and satellite launches, which he really loved!

Charlie was also involved in many community activities.  He was an active, participating member of the Civil Air Patrol for years, taught ground school for Frederick Aviation, and was a member of the Frederick Airport Commission.  He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

A son, Charles III, predeceased him in 2004.  He is survived by his loving wife, a beloved daughter, Charlotte and her husband Abe, and countless special friends. Charlie was always doing something to help others.  He cherished every beautiful day and enjoyed every moment of his life.
