Charles VanMetre

Charles VanMetre, 81, of Williamsport, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Doey's House in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Born on June 1, 1941, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Willis Powel VanMetre and Edna Grace (Snider) VanMetre.     

In Charlie’s early years he was a dairy farmer in Boonsboro, Maryland, he went on to work for C.W. Wright Construction Company of Richmond, Virginia as a Foreman from which he retired. Giving him more time to enjoy his love of Blue Grass music as a dobro and bass player and camping with friends.  

Serving the community, Charlie was a 34-year member of the Downsville Ruritan Club. He played music at the Williamsport Ruritan Club annual Carnivals, cooked for the Saturday breakfasts, supported the Christmas with Santa and Easter Egg hunts for children. He held the position as Director for many years and managed the Ruritan facility for most of his membership. 

Preceding him in death is his cherished wife Doris Arlene VanMetre; two sisters Charlotte L. (VanMetre) Ridenour, Minnie Mae (VanMetre) McGowen, and one brother Willis Kinsley “Bud” VanMetre; and nephew Douglas L. Grimm.  

He is survived by his brother Tommy S. VanMetre and his wife Linda VanMetre of Hagerstown, Maryland; his three sons; Joseph VanMetre and his wife Mary Ann VanMetre of Mt Airy, Maryland, Mark VanMetre and his wife Chris VanMetre of Big Pool, Maryland, and James VanMetre and his wife Kim VanMetre of Smithburg, Maryland; grandchildren Sarah Hose, Chase VanMetre, Isabel VanMetre, step-grandchildren Jason Gillespie and Brett W. Martin II; nieces and nephews Steve VanMetre, Donna L. Turner, Kenny VanMetre, Jennifer (VanMetre) Mellott, Wilma “Duke” Fixx, Mark J Grimm, Michael A. Grimm and William D. Ridenour II.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro, Maryland.

A celebration of Charles's life journey will take place at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 13, 2023, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Boonsboro Cemetery in Boonsboro, Maryland following services.
