Charles Toms

Charles Samuel Toms, 90, of Frederick, MD passed away and received the ultimate gift of healing and salvation on Friday, August 13, 2016. Charles was the husband of Elizabeth Downs Toms. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years Helen Virginia Wolf Toms.

Born December 15, 1925 in Frederick Co., MD he as the son of the late Norman Ellwood Toms, Sr. and Helena Young Toms.

Mr. Toms was a member of the South End Baptist Church of Frederick, MD. He served in the U.S. Navy and saw action on "D" day at Omaha beach Normandy France in WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star for service on June 6, 1944. Mr. Toms was awarded a Normandy Liberation Medal from the people of Normandy France and was awarded a certificate of Appreciation from Governor Rene Garrec, Secretary of Defense Normandy, France and also a certificate of Appreciation for his service in the Naval Armed Guard WWII from the United States Senate signed Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski. Charles was a member of the Navy memorial at 7th and Penn Ave., Washington, D.C., Charter member of "D" day memorial Bedford, PA, charter member of the National WWII Museum, New Orleans, LA, Life member and Past Post Commander of Post "78" Cresap's Rifles 29th Divisiton Association, Frederick, MD and Life member of the American Legions, Woodsboro, MD. After serving 3 years in the United States Navy, Charles served 9 years in the United States Army Reserves as Sergeant First Class on board 100 ft. ocean going tug as First Mate and Chief Boswain.

Mr. Toms worked for 55 years as Electrician wiring industrial, commercial, steel mill, ship yard and line work. He spent his last job as Electrical Foreman at D.O.E. in Germantown, MD for General Services Administration.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his two daughters Bonita Jean Jenkins of Bunker Hill, WV and Gwen Lee Stoehr and husband Karl of TX; three step-sons George Downs, Frederick, MD, Robert Downs, Dover, PA and Timothy Downs and wife Katie of Frederick, MD ; aunt Lena Blume of New Midway, MD; sister-in-law Marion Toms, CA; grandchildren Samantha Lee Riley and husband J.T., TX, Sarah Ann Gilliland and husband Matt, TX, Sandra Marie Sellers and husband Stetson, TX, Brandy Jenkins, OH, Bianca Jones and husband Joshua, VA, Jason Downs, MD, Jamie Ambrose, MD, Maria Lee, MD, Elizabeth Downs, MD and Sarah Downs, MD; brothers, George Henry Toms and wife Doris of Walkersville, MD, Roland Alvertis Toms and wife Evelyn of New Oxford, PA; sisters Nancy Louise Horner and husband Rev. Fred Horner of New Windsor, MD, Phyllis Naundorf and husband Ernie of Walkersville, MD; great-grandchildren Hanna Hardin, Kylea Hardin, Gerard Hardin, Jr., Ryan Gilliland, Jonathan Gilliland, Sydney Sellers, Austin Sellers, Lincoln Sellers, Savana Ambrose, Autumn Henderson, Aiden Jones, Austin Jenkins and Lexi Salom and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister Judith Fay Carl and husband James of Taneytown, MD and brother Norman Ellwood Toms, Jr and wife Mary of Thurmont, MD; brother Ricahrd Toms and wife Cathy of Walkersville and son-in-law Earl Jenkins of Bunker Hill, WV and brother John Toms of Sacramento, CA

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 and Thursday, August 18 from 2-7PM where a funeral service will be held on Friday, August 19 at 10AM. Pastor Dave Beeson and Rev. Fred Horner will officiate.

Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to Building Veterans (Thurmont) or any veterans assistance program.
