Mr. Charles “Charlie” Leroy Shaffer, 82, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Jo Ann Gorman Shaffer.
Born March 15, 1930 in Thurmont, MD, he was the son of the late Paul and Hazel Duncan Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer served his country in the U. S. Army. During his working career, he was employed at Ft. Detrick and Johns Hopkins Research Center. He was a member of the Thurmont AMVETS Post #7, American Legion Post #168 and was a lifetime member of the Blue Ridge Sportman’s Club. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, helping the Auxiliary at Woodsboro Fire Co., watching sports and in earlier years fishing and hunting. Charlie always left a good impression on those around him and was always a giving person.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Darlene Hawkins and husband Jay of Hayward, CA, Charlene Shaffer and Ray Wetzel of Orrtanna, PA, Robin Clapsadl of Gettysburg, Charles “Chip” Shaffer of Orrtanna, PA, Donnie “Dusty” Shaffer of Frederick and Gary “Grill” Shaffer of Sabillasville, Fourteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers Robert Shaffer and wife Louise of Thurmont and Richard Shaffer and wife Sandra “Peach” of Walkersville. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul, Shirley, Darlene, Donnie and Harold Shaffer.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont on Monday, March 4, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, where services will be held Tuesday, March 5, at 11:00 am with Rev. Gary Hicks officiating.
Interment Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
