Mr. Charles Mertz,87, of Frederick, MD passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  He was the husband of Carol Mertz for 47 years.

Born on September 11, 1925 in Baltimore, MD.

Mr. Mertz proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Gustafson as a destroyer escort, protecting the East Coast from German Submarines during WWII.   He also enjoyed reunions every year with his Navy friends.  Charles was very  active with the Kiwanis of Frederick Co. and their community projects.  Prior to his retirement he worked for the Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. as a service technician.  During this time he was in charge of all phone calls during the Mideast Peace Conference at Camp David.  Charles enjoyed golfing and traveling with his wife Carol.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Charles Kimberly Mertz of Cumberland; grandson Bradley David Green and his wife Cindy of Midland; great-grandchildren Noah and Vance Green; his brother Donald Mertz of Baltimore and his sister Leona Pons of Baltimore; he was the brother-in-law of Ronald and Evelyn Steirer and Shirley and William Lisek and he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sister Elaine.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM where a funeral service will be held on Friday, May 17 at 11 AM.  Rev. Lloyd Fuss will officiate.

Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kiwanis of Frederick Co. either online at www.cffredco.org or Checks should be made payable to and mailed to the Community Foundation of Frederick County, MD, Inc., 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Insert “Kiwanis Fund” in the check’s memo line.
