Charles Kauffman, Sr.

November 15, 1925 — October 31, 2014

Charles F. Kauffman, Sr., 88, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, October 31, 2014, while surrounded by his loving family at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

Born on November 15, 1925, in Sharpsburg, Maryland, he was the son of Charles S. and Katherine H. (Clopper) Kauffman.

Charlie attended High School in Boonsboro and Martinsburg, West Virginia.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II.

Charlie retired after 30 years from Marquette Cement Company in Hagerstown, and also retired after 12 years from the National Park Service in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  In his later years he worked part time for the town of Boonsboro.

He attended the Harvest Life Ministries on Zittlestown Road, and he was also a member of the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro and the McClellan Gun Club in Keedysville, Maryland.

Charlie was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, whose favorite place was being at home with his family.  He was passionate about his grandchildren and always wanted to live long enough to see them grow up.  He loved the outdoors, yard work, and especially spending time on his tractor.

He is survived by his wife, O. Mae (Hetzel) Kauffman; three daughters, O. Christine Hawkins and husband Richard of Boonsboro, Lora K. Budnick and husband Edward of Jefferson, Maryland, Kimberly K. Needy and husband Wayne of Boonsboro; one son, Charles "Skip" F. Kauffman, Jr. and wife Cindy of Boonsboro; five grandchildren, J.R. Hawkins, Andrea Spencer, Amanda McElhannon, Kate Budnick, and Nathan Needy; and seven great grandchildren, Tricia, Ella, Dalton, Trenten, Kylie, Ryan, and Luke.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Hammersla; his brother, Carlton Kauffman; and one grandson, Mark Needy.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.  Rev. Jeff Summers will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 from Boonsboro.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the funeral home.
