Charles Smith

Charles James Smith, 84, of Appletown Road in Boonsboro, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.


Born on November 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Elmer Victor and Mary Naomi (Reeder) Smith from Middletown, Maryland.

He was a 1947 graduate of Boonsboro High School, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Marian E. (Rohrer) Smith of Rohrersville, Maryland.

Upon graduation from high school, he was employed with Acme Markets where he worked as a clerk and then eventually as a store manager, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church at Locust Grove in Rohrersville.

Charles will be fondly remembered for his love of hunting, fishing, raising Purple Martins, and spending time with his family.  He was an avid NASCAR Fan and his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marian E. (Rohrer) Smith of Boonsboro, whom he married on August 4, 1947; one daughter, Brenda Kay (Smith) Sulcer of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Brenton W. Sulcer and his fiancé, Melissa Ward, both of Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Ryan E. Sulcer of Hagerstown; and two sisters, Geraldine Smith of Middletown and Rosalie Stull of Boonsboro.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery, where Charles will be laid to rest next to his parents.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
