Charles Smith

Charles I. Smith Jr. 75, of Monrovia, MD passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012. Born January 31, 1937 in Trenton, NJ, he graduated from Allentown High School and West Virginia University with a degree in Animal Husbandry.  Following graduation he served his country in the U.S. Army.  Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army he pursued the family Standardbred Horse Racing business as an owner, trainer and driver.  He served on the school board in Upper Freehold Township.  He was a member of the United States Trotting Association and the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Assocation of New Jersey where served as a director.   He campaigned several top horses including Don Baker, Dale Volo, and New Jersey Sire Stakes champions Red Eric, Eric B Sharp, Solar Ray, and The Bambino.  He raced his stable at Freehold, Brandywine, Liberty Bell, the Meadowlands as well as various other east coast tracks.  After giving up his public stable he worked as assistant trainer for the late Dr. Ken Seeber, Maple Ridge Farm and later was employed by Winbak Farm in Chesapeake City, Maryland.  He continued to reside in Maryland until his death.  He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies, Flyers and Eagles fan.  He enjoyed baking “sweets”, cookies, bread and making homemade pizza from scratch.
He was the son of the late Charles I. Smith Sr. (one of the founders on the New Jersey Sire Stakes Program), and the late Helen E. Smith. Loving husband of M. Louise Smith. Devoted father of Terry Richardson and husband John, Debra Storey and husband James, Charlene Smith, Patricia Harmon and husband Rob, and Dale Smith all of New Jersey. Step-father of Thomas Barrick Jr and Kimberly Young and husband Thomas of Maryland. Grandfather of Mikayla, Haley, Madison, Tyler, Grace, Tayler, Casey, Tyler, Elora, Aaron, Spencer, Gabrielle and Wyatt. Brother of Elizabeth Dey of New Jersey. Visitation will be held on Tuesday July 24, 2012 from 7-9pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd, Mt. Airy,  MD, 21771 where Services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday July 25, 2012. Reverend Franklin D. Bishop will officiate. Interment will be at 2:00pm in Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
