Charles (Charlie) M. Hays, Jr., 84, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed from this life on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at his home while surrounded by his family.
Born on June 22, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Millard and Catherine Marie (Barnhart) Hays.
Charlie was a 1948 graduate from Hagerstown High School.
He was a veteran of the United States AirForce, having served during the Korean War.
Charlie began his career as a draftsman at New York Central Ironworks in Hagerstown, and continued on to become an executive in the steel fabrication industry in Maryland, Texas, and New Jersey.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.
Charlie loved to play sports, from high school athletics to becoming an avid golfer. But most of all, he loved and adored his wife Nonie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Norma E. (Sampsell) Hays; two sons, Charles M. Hays, III of Apopka, Florida, and Richard A. Hays and wife Marybeth of Fayetteville, Arkansas; one sister, Alice L. (Hays) and husband Rev. Dr. Ronald Weagley of Sebastian, Florida; one brother, Milt R. Hays, also of Sebastian; and three granddaughters, Rachel, Krista, and Katherine and her husband Brandon Smith. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral ceremony in celebration of Charlie's life journey will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Rev. Emil Gretarsson will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the funeral home.
