Charles E. “Ed” Miller of Frederick, Maryland, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on February 12, 2025, at home with his wife, Barbara, by his side. He was born on September 19, 1943, in Floral Park, Long Island, New York to the late Philip Miller and Josephine (Smith) Miller. At a young age, he moved to Maryland, mostly growing up in Pikesville, Baltimore County. He graduated from Milford Mill High School, then attended Catonsville Community College, and graduated in 1967 from the University of Maryland, College Park, College of Agriculture, with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors.
In 1967 after college, he enlisted in the Army ending his active duty service in 1969 at Fort Belvoir, VA as a Specialist (E-4).
In 1971, he began his career with USDA, APHIS (Animal Plant Health Inspection Service), which spanned 34 years until he retired in 2005 as Senior Entomologist (PPD) working in Riverdale, MD with a specialty in Risk Assessment and Mitigation. Other jobs he held during his illustrious career included Inspector, Port Entomologist in San Juan, PR, and Entomology Instructor. He also trained and worked with agriculturists in many other countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. After retiring from USDA, Ed continued to work in the same field garnering much attention for his expertise.
Ed had many hobbies. He was a World Traveler, both work and pleasure taking him to over 100 countries and 49 states. He was an avid Birder, Fisherman, Hunter, and a History Buff.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, and his two sons, Joseph (Mariya) and James (Ashley), three grandchildren, Corbin, Edgar, and Nina as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by many loving family members, good friends and co-workers. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Philip and John as well as his nephew, Philip, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD.
A funeral service will take place at 10:00 am on Friday, February 21, 2025 from the funeral home chapel. There will be light refreshments following the service where the family will receive friends.
Interment will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund (www.worldwildlife.org) or Tunnel to Towers (www.t2t.org).
