Charles Charuhas

Charles James Charuhas, 89, of Mount Airy, and most recently Country Meadows of Frederick, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Harris Charuhas, his wife of 59 years.

Born Feb. 15, 1921, in Washington, he was the son of James and Angelike Charuhas, who emigrated from Greece in the early 1900s. He was the first in his family to be born in the U.S.

Charles graduated from Roosevelt High School and proudly served his country in World War II as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked for the civil rights division at the Department of Justice and retired after 38 years of service. Following his retirement, he enjoyed employment at Needwood Golf Course in Montgomery County for 20 years as a starter and office assistant.

Charles loved big-band music and was an amateur boxer in his youth. He was a Washington Redskins fan, with season tickets for 40 years, and closely followed the Baltimore Orioles. He enjoyed family gatherings with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, his daughter, Rosemary Alexander and husband Mike of Mount Airy, and identical twin sons, Joseph Charuhas and wife Diane of Montgomery Village and James Charuhas and wife Laura of Frederick; seven grandchildren, Michael "Muggs" and Kory Alexander, Tara and Tyler Charuhas, and Mary, Brendan and Georgia Charuhas; and close nephew, Dean Mantzuranis and wife Connie.

Charles was predeceased by two brothers, George and John Charuhas; and two sisters, Jean Skiados and Patsy Mantzuranis.

The funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Jan. 10, at Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Frederick. The family will be available to receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 920 W. Seventh St., Frederick, MD 21701.
